Ausführliche Beschreibung
JupyterHub.nrw is a central, state-wide service providing students, teaching staff, and researchers at universities in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) with simple and secure access to interactive, web-based working environments. The service is based on Jupyter Notebooks technology – digital documents in which text, code, graphics, and calculations can be collaboratively created and shared. With JupyterHub.nrw, users can directly access a fully pre-configured digital working environment via their web browser, without needing to install software or worry about technical setup. The platform is independent of personal hardware and works on laptops, tablets, and smartphones alike.
The major added value of JupyterHub.nrw lies in simplifying access to powerful digital tools for data analysis, programming, and scientific work. Students, for example, can use it to complete assignments, conduct data analysis, and develop computational models in a collaborative and reproducible manner. The service supports a wide range of disciplines, including computer science, mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities. It enables educators to create and distribute interactive learning materials, such as tutorials, coding exercises, and data visualization projects, directly within the browser. Additionally, researchers can use JupyterHub.nrw to manage and share their workflows, ensuring transparency and reproducibility in scientific research. The platform integrates with existing university IT infrastructure and supports authentication via institutional login systems (e.g., Shibboleth). It also provides scalable computing resources, including access to high-performance computing (HPC) clusters and cloud-based services, through APIs and containerized environments. For advanced users, JupyterHub.nrw supports custom environments, including pre-installed libraries and specialized software packages. The service is maintained and operated by the NRW State Ministry for Innovation, Science and Digitalization in collaboration with university IT departments and the German Research Foundation (DFG).
